We finished the Showcase presentations today. I have posted those marks on SAS, but students will not be getting their feedback sheets back until I have finished typing up the Peer Feedback.
We started doing the Showcase presentations today. Anyone that did not get to go should be ready for Monday.
I gave the class extra silent reading time today. Speaking of...reminder to all those who don't have a reading log passed in yet!
Reminder that the Showcase presentations are tomorrow! Be prepared! The class finished developing the criteria for their "Showcase" presentation. I have told everyone to be ready to present for Friday (November 25). Here's what they decided:
There are two parts to the presentation (speaker and listener): SPEAKER
ALL ASSIGNMENTS (including Reading Response Log) ARE DUE BY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29! Our class attended a presentation this morning to learn about using a Provincial Library Card to sign out e-books, audio books, and other items. Everyone received a form to sign up for a library card if they don't have one. Forms are due November 30.
Today was Journal #7. Topic options: 1) This is the last journal for Term 1. How was your first term at Hernewood? 2) What famous person would you like to have dinner with? 3) What would you pack in your suitcase if you could never go back home? 4) (as always) Your own topic Anyone absent today needs to complete this! We started designing the criteria for a presentation assignment. It's sort of a 'show and tell' presentation. Each student needs to bring in an object and talk about it for 1-2 minutes. I demonstrated today by talking about my Spurtle (a traditional Scottish porridge stirring stick...that looks like a magic wand!). We will finalize our criteria tomorrow, but students should be ready to present on Friday. Students got in pairs today to interview each other using the questions that they came up with last week. Each pair then met with another pair and each student introduced their partner based on the interview. We then came back together as a class to discuss what went right and wrong with the activity. The class gave lots of positive response to this.
Sorry for missing a few days!
On Tuesday we watched the preview clip of the November 16 Dragon's Den episode. Students had to give a 1-5 word spoken response and we made a pro/con list of the presenters. On Wednesday I shared what I had written in a Facebook post about my thoughts while getting the Christmas Cards for the Troops ready to send. This project is very close to my heart, and I appreciate the students that participated. I have copied that post on to the bottom of this update if you would like to read it. Each student also came up with 3 interview questions to ask another student. Interviews will take place next week. On Thursday we were in the Library so students could sign out books and silent read. Students also helped get some things ready for Parent Teacher Interviews. Thanks to everyone that came to Parent Teacher Interviews. I did receive a few notices about parents that were not able to attend, and I will be doing calls/emails early next week if requested. ___________________________________________________________ My Facebook Post: Tonight, I sit at my kitchen table licking a stack of bright red envelopes. These are not the Christmas cards I will send to my friends and family. These are Christmas cards written by my students to people they don't know in places they know little about. Tonight, the bright red envelopes have all been addressed to "Any Canadian Armed Forces Member" and each contain the MOST Canadian Christmas card I could find. They will go out in tomorrow's mail to seven different locations around the world where Canada currently has troops (locations that my students selected themselves from a list three times that many). Tonight, I sit here with a full heart from both the beautiful words my students wrote, and the possibility that each one of these bright red envelopes might bring a smile to someone who is away from their family and friends at a time of year I cherish. Tonight, I am searching for the words to tell my students tomorrow that they have made me proud. Tonight, I am warm, I am home, I am safe, and I am free. Today we wrote Journal #6. Optional topics: 1) You have the chance to go back and redo one event or day. What is it, why, and what would you keep or change? 2) What part of current clothing fashion do you really like or dislike? Why? 3) Your earliest memory. 4) (as always) Your own topic(s). We wrote our good copies of the Christmas Cards to the Canadian Armed Forces members. I will be mailing these tomorrow so that they will reach their destinations in time. We also watched a TED Talk to study good (and bad) traits of a speaker and to practice our listening skills. Each student was asked to say up to five words in response to the Talk, and then we made a pros and cons list about the skills of the speaker. (click "TED Talk" to go to link) Today ended up being a tying up loose ends day.
The class helped me create a poster for what should/shouldn't be happening during Silent Reading time. We all needed a reminder to help us use our reading time to its fullest. I have quite a lot of Remembrance Day related booklets/handouts/articles for the taking. Any parents that would like copies, please let me know and I will send it home. This is all materials provided by Veterans Affairs. My SAS is now functioning properly (I THINK!) so I plan to update it over the weekend. If you do not have your SAS password (students took home a sheet with usernames/passwords for students and parents) please contact the school office. Today we discussed Canada's current involvement in conflicts and operations around the world. We are sending Christmas cards addressed to "Any Canadian Armed Forces Member" that are serving overseas (The deadline to get them to Ontario to be forwarded is November 18). We wrote rough copies of the notes we want to include and will be doing the good copy tomorrow.
