Today we discussed effective listening strategies, and then got to put them into practice when two student volunteers read a short play-script for us on the topic of placing blame. We discussed how this was related to the poem we read earlier in the month ("First They Came").
Today we did a prediction and discussion exercise about If the World Were a Village. Students were amazed to learn there are almost 6000 languages in the world and only 9% of the world's population speak English.
We will be starting Journal writing on Monday. Students have been asked to get a scribbler or duotang ready for this. Journals will be kept in the classroom, so it needs to be separate from their binder or regular LA duotang. Students were asked at the beginning of September to have a binder and a scribbler or duotang (or two duotangs) for LA, so this is not a new requirement. Sorry for the missed post yesterday. I'm trying to get back in to the habit of posting after school.
Yesterday (Tuesday) we read and discussed "Principals and Principles." It gave us a chance to look at how an author develops ideas. I also introduced the silent reading response sheets that students will be using to tell me about the book they are reading in class during independent silent reading. Students should be reading a novel or a non-fiction text at their reading level for this. Extra copies are available in the red pockets at the front of the room. Today (Wednesday) we read and discussed a text that is adapted from the book If the World Were a Village. We will be doing a writing response for it tomorrow. Today students continued to work on their "Small Moment Writing." It should be at least 1/2 page and is due tomorrow if it wasn't passed in today.
A Course Outline was sent home with students last week to have signed. Please return these. |
